Idumea (1989)

from Loners & Misfits by Steve Peters

/

about

I moved from New York City to Santa Fe, New Mexico in August of 1988, and this piece straddles those two places. It reconciles my interests in folk music and free improvisation, something I failed to accomplish when I was in NYC. Moving to New Mexico somehow made it easier to figure out, and this was probably the first piece I made after moving there.

The mysterious sound at the beginning was recorded in NYC for a dance piece for John Carrafa, using a bass recorder made by Ben Hume out of a piece of wooden dowel that you'd use in a closet to hang clothes on. The violin and vocal parts were recorded at home in Santa Fe and are very loosely based on the shape-note hymn of the same name, which I'd been messing around with since at least 1983 or so.
