jenmcgoo I adored this soundtrack to the Agnes Martin documentary. I am a fan of Philip Glass, and there is a looping quality of this music which is related but different in a lovely way. It took my breath away to hear it because it was love at first listen, and I now play it regularly.

about

This music was commissioned by New Deal Films for the original soundtrack to "Agnes Martin: With My Back to the World," a documentary about the iconic abstract painter (1912-2004) directed by Mary Lance and released in 2002.

While most of these pieces were made specifically for the film, a few used material recycled from older works. Others were recorded for the film but not used. Everything has been remixed for this release, so may sound different from the versions heard in the film.

The string pieces were created in collaboration with Ben Daitz, who improvised over my guitar parts, though the latter are not always included in the final mix.

My hope was to not only evoke the feeling of Martin's work but also the landscape of northern New Mexico, with a nod to the region's musical traditions. A balance of the sublime and the rustic. Simple beauty with rough edges.

Many thanks to Mary Lance for the opportunity to contribute to this important project celebrating one of my favorite artists, and to Agnes Martin for inspiration, generosity, and encouragement.
