about
Made in 2006 as a video + six-channel sound installation with artist Christine Wallers, for a show at the Portland Art Center (since closed). A meditation on the cusps of darkness and light, sound and silence. The visuals are projected sequences of still photographs of cloudless sky, taken in the moments just before darkness and dawn. The sound is derived from a 40-minute field recording made on the beach at Kalaloch, Washington as night visibly descended: the last glints of light on waves, the first twinklings of stars. That material was treated exactly as in the Chamber Music series, but using a very noisy outdoor source recording rather than the usual indoor "silence."
