about

The Very Rich Hours was made in 2009 as a site-specific listening environment for the historic San Ysidro Church in Corrales, New Mexico.

Speaking voices describe places with which people feel a personal sense of connection, their observations articulating a deep reverence for and attention to the land and forming a composite portrait of the New Mexico landscape. The Latin names of endangered resident species are sung quietly in the background, a reminder of the fragility of life and our impact upon it.

These human sounds are embedded within a slowly evolving soundscape of environmental sounds drawn from my archive of field recordings made in New Mexico over fifteen years. Some sounds were recorded with contact mics attached directly to plants and trees, revealing their surprising internal sounds. Others have been electronically processed. A few of these sounds have appeared in earlier projects of mine, but many are heard here for the first time.

The installation version was a continuous 70 minute piece. It has here been edited down into four separate sections.
