about

Chamber Music is an ongoing series of site-specific sound works, each made entirely from a single recording of the empty space in which they are presented. An hour of "silent" room tone is recorded when no people are in the building; that recording is heavily filtered to extract drones made of the room's resonant frequencies, which are the only materials used.

I think of these pieces as having as much to do with light as with sound – the way natural light changes and moves through a space, the hue of the room shifting subtly throughout the day. They are intended to be heard at low volume, as a kind of sonic tint to the air.

All of the pieces included in this album are short excerpts of much longer unreleased works. See also the albums Filtered Light (Chamber Music 4), and Two Ways of Listening to Nothing (Chamber Music 6).
